A Look Inside the Amazon Fulfillment Centre in Kemps Creek

Harry Todd
The first Amazon Robotics Fulfillment Centre (FC) in the Southern Hemisphere and largest warehouse ever built in Australia, the Kemps Creek FC has effectively doubled Amazon’s operational footprint in Australia since its introduction in early 2022.

With a total floor area of 200,000 sqm and the capacity to house 20 million items across four levels, it supports over 11,000 Australian businesses, including third party sellers who use Amazon to store and ship their products.

fc1Located within a 12-hour drive of more than half of the Australian population, the Kemps Creek FC uses over 14 kilometres of advanced conveyance equipment and a highly advanced systems of robotic drivers, QR codes and storage pods. The new facility has been designed to efficiently pick and pack products from all throughout the massive FC and provide increasingly faster delivery times to much of the country.

The advanced system utilises robotics drivers, capable of lifting as much as 680 kilograms of inventory, to work with employees by moving products to and from shelves, removing the need for human input in picking inventory items, or placing them in their correct spots. The inventory is stored in over 37,000 storage pods, housing up to 20 million smaller items at a time that can be easily located, picked and packed through an organised system of QR codes marking each item throughout the centre.

Amazon’s Kemps Creek FC represents the future of warehousing globally, and, although it is the first of its kind in the country, it won’t be the last. The high efficiency processes are setting a new standard for warehousing and allowing Amazon packages to arrive faster and with more accuracy than other competitors.

Learn more about the Kemps Creek FC and the other ways Amazon is investing locally in people, technology and sustainability at the Day 1 (25 July) Keynote, Delivering Smiles for Australians with Anna Reid, Senior Program Manager – Innovation.
